ABOUT ME
Emily Fitzpatrick, LPC, DCC
She/her/hers
(LPC007985)
Thank you for taking the time to visit my practice. By researching for a therapist who is the right fit for you, you have already begun the process of self-advocacy-- this is significant! Therapy is for everyone and I strive to make my practice a place that feels safe, peaceful, and accessible. I am particularly interested in understanding the culture and context my client's grew up in and socialized beliefs that may be standing in their way of making the changes they would like to make. I am an advocate and ally for the LGBTQIA community including gender non-conforming and non-binary people and affirm the need for safe, informed, and competent psychotherapy practices for this vulnerable and underserved group. I also promote a sex-positive therapeutic environment where clients are free to explore all aspects of their intersectional identity.

My style of therapy is highly engaged and interactive, infused with humor and raw empathy and compassion. One of the core tenants and driving philosophies of my practice is to be a human connecting with other authentic human beings in a way that feels safe and challenging. I often tell my clients, you should expect to work hard in this space and feel stretched when you leave and I will commit to bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to our sessions, walking with you each step of the way.

I have a Master's of Science in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University and completed my undergraduate work at the University of Georgia in Psychology. I am a Distance Credentialed Counselor and provide phone and video sessions for clients I've met with 1-3 times in person. I also specialize in Narrative Therapy and Trauma Informed Attachment Therapy and offer these highly effective, treatment strategies for individuals who have survived complex trauma and live with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

NARRATIVE THERAPY & ATTACHMENT
Individual Therapy for Survivors of Complex Trauma & PTSD
Narrative Therapy is an empirically supported short-term approach to addressing trauma spectrum disorder for survivors of singular, multiple, and complex trauma. Narrative work has been particularly impactful across diverse cultures and settings to resolve traumas for adults and children who have survived traumas associated with sexual and domestic violence; war; natural disaster; and human trafficking. In practice, Narrative Therapy combines a narrative approach with cognitive behavioral exposure techniques to address the neuropsychological effects of trauma and memory on a person’s interpersonal and intrapersonal functioning. Through this approach, clients benefit from contextualizing their trauma experiences in a holistic story that allows them to process emotions related to the trauma and develop coping skills for potential dangerous and/or safe conditions.
Attachment theory approaches trauma through three components: 1). Trust and safe attachment in the therapeutic alliance, 2). Understanding and cultivating the individual's relationship to self, 3). Reparenting the inner child as the ideal parent/attachment figure. Through the therapeutic partnership and empathetic facilitation, the individual living with trauma or complex trauma stemming from childhood relationships with attachment figures, the individual is able to cultivate a deep understanding of their unmet needs, how to establish safe boundaries, and self-regulate intense emotions.
